Security Dog Services

Static security guards play a crucial role in protecting restricted or private premises from unwanted intruders. They are also used to diffuse potential conflicts and disputes. At K9 Patrol, we have a specialist team of static security dogs.

Static dog units are a visible and highly-effective visual deterrent against crime and security breaches. Our static security patrol dog teams are trained in article tracking, building searches, finding and locating, and handler protection. They are extremely cost-effective and allow you to reduce the number of static security guards at your business or property. Dogs are far more sensitive to scents and sounds than humans, so can detect unwanted intruders and potential danger in larger areas. Studies demonstrate that one security dog and handler can effectively replace three static security guards, making them a fantastic security solution for those on a budget.

Drug Detection Dogs

Our team of highly trained drug detection dogs can be used for both passive and proactive assignments. Our passive sniffer dog teams work with handlers to observe crowds and queues, scanning them for drugs. They do not make direct contact with visitors and staff at the venue. Our dogs indicate the presence of illicit substances by sitting down in front of the suspected carrier, providing security services or police with a valid reason to search the suspect.

Our proactive drug detection dogs are more dynamic, actively searching a specific area for the presence of drugs. Operating off-leash where appropriate, our proactive canine dogs are trained to conduct intrusive inspections. The dogs we use for proactive drug detection are agile and fast, allowing them to search large areas much faster than humans.

We also provide drug awareness demonstrations to schools and other vulnerable groups. All of our drug detection handlers maintain DBS checks.  Additionally, K9 Patrol collaborates with Pub Watch groups, using drug detection dogs to identify the presence of and act as a deterrent against illicit substances.

Explosive Detection Dogs

At K9 Patrol, we have a specialist team of explosive detection dogs. All dogs working in this team receive training in detecting chemicals used in the manufacture of explosives. Firearms and explosive detection dogs play a vital role in keeping the country safe from violent attacks. Many of our explosive detection dogs are Labradors and Spaniels. These breeds are highly intelligent and respond well to training. They are calm and responsive, even in highly pressurised environments.

Our dogs are trained to detect 12 basic odours. If an odour is detected the dog will give a passive signal, such as sitting still or lying down, alerting their handler. We ensure that our explosive detection dogs receive frequent comprehensive training.

Mobile Response Unit

Our mobile response unit is deployed in response to an alarm, which is activated when an intruder enters your property. We recommend mobile response units to clients with commercial properties or high-value homes, Our mobile response units are also suitable for construction sites and provide excellent peace of mind. We also offer mobile patrols.

Other Specialist Dogs

In addition to security, drug and explosive detection, we also offer a variety of other services. If you’re looking for personal protection, rescue, or cadaver detection, we can help. We also provide dogs for illegal tobacco, illegal firearms and counterfeit cash detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are security dogs trained?

All dogs in the K9 Patrol team receive frequent, comprehensive training. Normally, training starts when the dogs are puppies. Dogs are socialised and exposed to new people, animals and places. Obedience is taught from an early age using motivation-based techniques, such as rewarding with treats and attention. Setting rules and structure is essential. Each dog must recognise a pack leader. This is the role of the dog handler.

Drug detection dogs are trained using a towel, which is thoroughly washed before use to ensure the absence of scent. Later, drugs will be rolled into the towel. The dog will then begin to associate the smell of the drug with the smell of their favourite toy. When playing, the trainer will hide the drugs, and reward the dog if it is able to detect them. Dogs have a highly developed sense of smell, making them perfect for detecting illicit substances.

Which dogs are best for security?

At K9 Patrol, we use a variety of different breeds of dogs. German Shepherds make great security dogs as they are responsive to training and have a great work ethic. Labradors and Springer Spaniels are often used as drug detection dogs due to their intelligence.

Do security dogs work alone?

Each of our dogs is trained to work alongside a handler, who directs the dog and responds to signals. Our handlers can cover large sites, guarding against trespassers and potential intruders.
